The First presents an intimate black-and-white portrait of George Washington carved into the granite face of Mount Rushmore, isolating the nation's first president in a composition that emphasizes the monument's immense scale, texture, and craftsmanship.
The close perspective brings Washington's features forward, revealing the rugged character of the granite, natural fractures, and visible marks left by the monumental carving process. Presented against the dark sky, the pale stone becomes especially striking, allowing light and shadow to define the contours of the sculpture.
The title The First honors Washington's place as the first President of the United States and his enduring position at the beginning of the American presidency.
