Architect of Liberty presents an intimate black-and-white portrait of Thomas Jefferson carved into the granite face of Mount Rushmore, focusing attention on the monument’s extraordinary scale, texture, and craftsmanship.
The close composition brings Jefferson’s features forward, revealing the rugged surfaces, natural fractures, and variations within the stone. Light and shadow define the contours of the carved face, giving the photograph a sculptural depth while emphasizing the relationship between the presidential likeness and the mountainside from which it was formed.
The title Architect of Liberty reflects Jefferson’s role as the principal author of the Declaration of Independence and his place in the founding of the United States.
